Learning objectives
By the end of this course, the learner will be able to:
- Identify the keywords in a search statement
- Describe at least 5 search techniques learnt and when to use them
- Create search strategies using the appropriate search techniques such as Boolean operators, phrase, domain, title, file type and field searching
- Evaluate the credibility of websites and their contents
Course outline
Module 1:
- Why do you need search strategies?
- Determining keywords and formulating search statements
- Using Boolean operators, phrase, file type and field searching to refine a search
- Deconstructing a Uniform Resource Locator (URL)
Module 2:
Applying the search strategies learnt in Module 1 in different situations:
- Scenario 1: A student’s class project
- Scenario 2: A homemaker’s quest for information
- Scenario 3: An entrepreneur’s search for data
- Scenario 4: A doctor’s need to keep updated
Module 3:
• Why some of the information on the Internet may not be credible?
• Five criteria for evaluating websites and their contents
• Evaluating different types of websites using a checklist
