“Organising libraries” is an introductory course that gives you a big-picture view of the many aspects that you need to consider when organising libraries of any size. The course will guide you in understanding the needs of your patrons and the collection and the library services that will meet those needs. The course is designed to be visual and practical to give you the confidence to take those important first steps in organising your library!

Learning Objective

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Apply key concepts that make it easy for patrons to use library programmes and services
  • Explore the basic process of setting up a library
  • Extend a positive library experience to patrons

Course Outline

Module 1:

  • Describe the key concepts on organising libraries
  • Define your library's purpose and patrons better
  • Define your collection and classification scheme
  • Select the library services you want to offer patrons

Module 2:

  • Distinguish between libraries of different sizes
  • Distinguish between collections and services used in libraries of different sizes
  • Visualise the collection and services for your library

Module 3:

  • Describe key considerations in designing the layout of a library
  • Outline the key considerations in organising the collection of a library
  • Apply good practices in designing the layout and collection of a library

Module 4:

  • Consider tips and suggestions by NLB when organising a library
