Instilling the Love for Reading in Kids

As a parent, there is nothing better than to see your child fall in love with reading. Helping your child to build this habit early has many benefits—imagination, better memory and greater confidence. In this course, you’ll learn how to introduce your child to reading and take them through the various reading levels and stages. This course is designed to bring out the excellent reader in your child!

Module 1: Born to read

  • Recognise that reading is an implicit process
  • List the four powerful influences on a child’s motivation to read
  • Initial assessment of your child’s development and reading readiness
  • Apply characteristics associated with positive parenting

Module 2: Nurturing a reader

  • Use the three criteria to nurture a reader
  • Apply positive engagement techniques in your child’s daily routine
  • Progressing your child from learning the alphabets to reading minimal print books
  • Use the checklist to assess your child’s progress in reading readiness

Module 3: Reading stages

  • Use the checklist to identify the six types of reluctant readers
  • Apply positive engagement with reluctant readers during reading-related activities
  • Use the checklist to determine your child’s realistic reading stage
  • Browse the selection of book titles appropriate for your child’s reading stage

Module 4: Reading the right books

  • Use the checklist to identify common traits in books suitable for your child’s reading stage
  • Apply strategies to ensure that books used correspond to your child’s reading level
  • Provide your child access to the right books at home and at the library
