This course about using storytelling techniques to better engage your child when it comes to introducing them to early literacy skills, stroking their imagination or just extending their learning. The course is filled with short videos on storytelling techniques and even has a collection of 100 plus storybook titles, all categorised for easy selection. You will also get a set of tools and checklists that you can download and use. This course is designed to bring out the storyteller in you!

Learning Objective

By the end of this course, the learner will be able to:

  • Apply the criteria for choosing a good story
  • Distinguish between the parameters in each of the three steps of storytelling
  • Use different techniques appropriate for various storytelling moments
  • Choose a storytelling style that suits you
  • Apply the steps involved in post-telling evaluation

Module 1: Storytelling and its benefits

  • Elements of a good story
  • Differentiate between storytelling and story reading
  • Benefits of storytelling in regards to early literacy development
  • Reasons why parents should tell stories
  • Appropriate times for storytelling

Module 2: Choosing a story

  • Distinguish different types of stories
  • Apply the criteria for choosing a story and manage the parameters in each criteria
  • Choose a story from the story collection which fits the purpose of your telling, type of interaction and age group of your listeners

Module 3: Telling your story

  • Apply the three steps of story telling
  • Prepare for the telling

Module 4: Discovering your telling style

  • Explore different telling styles
  • Use different telling styles based on voice, visual aids and interaction

Module 5: Post-telling activities

  • Extending the listener's learning experience
  • Evaluating the telling experience with regards to both the listener and the teller
