Newspapers offer a rich source of information covering trends as well as developments. However, this resource is often overlooked or might not be fully utilised by students. This course is specially designed to assist students to integrate newspaper resources into their project work research. Using hands-on approach, students have the opportunity to ‘deconstruct’ the different types of newspapers to better understand the value of information published in newspapers.

Learning objectives

By the end of this course, the learner will be able to: 

  • Identify the strengths and weaknesses of the different types of newspapers in Singapore
  • Differentiate the types of information published in different sections of the newspaper
  • Apply the search techniques learn to locate information in print and electronic newspapers resources
  • Synthesize and integrate newspapers articles into their project work reports

  • Differences between tabloid vs.‘intellectual’ or broadsheet newspapers such as The New Paper, Straits Times and Business Times
  • Deconstructing the newspapers: Mapping the different sections of the newspapers to the types of information published
  • Scanning of newspapers articles: Tips and Techniques
  • Synthesizing, summarizing and paraphrasing newspapers articles: Tips and Techniques
  • Searching electronic newspapers resources: Hands-on approach in using databases and news websites on the Internet
